Lord’s Supper samples

Sample – Tell a new believer about the Last Supper

ANDREW:     Rufus, will you be joining us in the breaking of the bread and the taking of the cup?

RUFUS:          (Confused):  Breaking of the bread?  Andrew, I don't know what you’re talking about.

ANDREW:     Ahhh yes, I forget you are a new believer.  You have not yet eaten what I call the meal of remembrance.

RUFUS:          Remembrance . . . remembrance of what?

ANDREW:     Remembrance, Rufus, of the last supper I ever ate with my Lord Jesus.  (Slight pause as Andrew reflects.)
You see it was the First Day of Unleavened Bread, and in the evening, Jesus, the other eleven disciples and I were reclined at the table eating the Passover meal.  This night was different than any other, for Jesus spoke of things that troubled us.

(Lights fade on Andrew and Rufus and come up on center stage.  This is the Last Supper scene.  Jesus and the Twelve Disciples are at the table.  Some eating and conversation can be seen and heard.)

JESUS:           (The authority of His first word compels the others to listen.)  Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.

DISCIPLES:  (Speaking to each other):  Surely not I?

(All the Disciples look troubled.  They turn to Jesus.  In disbelief Judas has stopped          with his hand in the bowl which was used for dipping the bread.  Jesus reaches to dip in the same bowl, as John (who is right next to Jesus) speaks.  As John speaks, Jesus withdraws his hand from the bowl.)

Sample – Jesus celebrates the first Last Supper meal

JESUS:           (As He speaks, the Disciples once again direct their attention to Him.)
I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.

(Jesus takes the Bread.  His mouth moves in prayer.  Then He breaks the Bread and hands it out.)
Take . . . eat.  This is My Body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.

(Disciples eat the Bread; confused but obedient.

Jesus then takes the Cup and once again offers silent prayer as He lifts the Cup toward Heaven.)
This Cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.  It is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins

Sample – The crucifixion

RUFUS:          Why did they not release him?

ANDREW:     Pilate tried, but the very people Jesus came to save were the ones who had Him put to death.

RUFUS:          How?

ANDREW:     The chief priest and the other officers of the Temple incited the crowd, and they began to shout "Crucify him!  Crucify him!”

(People in the audience also begin to shout "Crucify him!")

ANDREW:     Pilate, fearing a riot, washed his hands of it and delivered Jesus to be crucified upon a cross.

(Lights fade on Andrew and Rufus as we hear the sound of a hammer striking a spike.  Lights come up on stage right.  Standing with their backs to the audience is a small group of Roman Soldiers and Mourners.  They are obstructing the view of Jesus being nailed to the cross.  All that is seen is the hammer as it is raised to deliver the repeated blows.)

SONG

(Lights come up on Andrew and Rufus.)

ANDREW:     Jesus is alive.  That is what makes this meal so blessed.  Some say we celebrate this Lord's Supper out of obedience.  But I tell you, Rufus, even if I had not been commanded to do this, I would desire it no less.  For I take the Bread and Cup, so that I might remember the sacrifice of the One who loved me enough to suffer and die that I might live.  (Pause)  Come, let's join the others quickly.  Peter shall be breaking the bread very soon.

(Lights fade)

BRIDGE

(Lights come up on center stage as Group of Believers are gathered around a table where Peter is prepared to break the Bread.  He nods his acknowledgment as Andrew and Rufus enter the room.)

PETER:          Then Jesus took the Bread and looking up to heaven He gave thanks to You His Almighty Father, as do we.  (Pause)  Then breaking Bread, He gave it to us saying, "This is My Body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me."

(Disciples take the Bread.  It is then handed to the others in the room and then distributed to the congregation.)
