Who do you say I am
“But,
who do you say I am”?
That is the question that Jesus privately asked his disciples.
They, like the multitudes who had been drawn to Jesus’ ministry, marveled at
the things they had witnessed. He had performed miracles of healing, driven
out demons, calmed the storm at sea and even brought a dead child back to life.
His dynamic teachings were delivered with authority and He was not afraid to
engage the religious leadership in debate. This was no ordinary carpenter.
According to His disciples, the multitudes that followed Jesus believed Him
to be a supernatural spiritual being. Some said He was John the Baptist brought
back to life. Some said He was Elijah, returned to earth, or perhaps one of
the prophets of old.
It was then that Jesus looked into the eyes of the disciples gathered closely
around Him and asked the question, “But, who do you say I am”?
Peter spoke up and said, “You are the Christ. You are the Son of the Living
God”. Paraphrased, “You are everything. You are my life and my hope”.
Peter’s response was significantly different from that of the crowds. Peter
saw in Jesus something that the multitudes did not see, even though they had
witnessed the same miracles and heard the same teachings.
What was the difference?
Intimacy.
God was able to reveal to Peter what could not be revealed by flesh and blood
because Peter placed himself in the presence of Jesus. He had a personal, living,
daily relationship that provided a depth of knowledge, insight and love that
the multitudes did not experience.
Are you experiencing that same relationship, that same depth of love?
Do you believe Jesus to be some spiritual being to be listened to and watched
from a distance? Do you simply marvel at His teachings and miracles without
experiencing any intimacy at all?
Come out from the multitudes. Get alone with Jesus in prayer and study. Talk
to Him, search His Word, know Him and desire His presence. It is then that God
reveals to you intimately and personally who His Son is.
How will you answer the question, “Who do you say that I am”?
